Decomposing in the side-yard
A few years ago I wrote a brief something about composting for the Huffington Post. As someone without outdoor space but a lot of feelings about throwing out kitchen scraps I felt frustrated by my limited composting options. But things have changed, as of last week, we have a side yard! Privacy lattice has already been constructed, the dog has urinated out there, citronella candles are being...

I learned a very important lesson
I make my living doing television commercials. This is a terrific way to make a living and I feel very fortunate. It’s nice work if you can get it and sometimes I get it and sometimes I get it less. Last week at an audition, I was paired with another woman, meaning we were going to go in together, slate (which means say your name into the camera) and then do the dialogue and action...
Alterna-toddy
I believe in a hot toddy, I’m not sure if it’s the honey and lemon (nature’s antibiotics, “nature’s antibiotics”) or the bourbon. (I think it’s the bourbon.) But I’m tee-totaling this week (not pregnant, just trying to lose 4 pounds) so when I started to feel sniffly tonight I made my go-to-alterna-toddy. One can find various versions of ginger,...
On smelling the same--with lots of adverbs
Last night I complimented a friend on the way she smelled. “What are you wearing?” I asked. She told me it was a scent from a company not known for fine perfume, imagine something like “Love Etc” from The Body Shop. I was surprised. She added she also had something “nice” she wore on special occasions but couldn’t remember the name. It was Narcisco...

Old Love
I found the Old Love tumblr via A Cup of Jo. Although some of the photos are poignant and others thrilling for past style choices, what struck me most was a particular pose. It seems like recognizable hetereosexual couples being formally photographed are encouraged to gaze wistfully at one partner, or off camera, while the other looks directly into camera. Usually, there’s a gender...

We do not open the door for strangers
Our neighborhood has sidewalks. The houses are close together and there are no noteworthy inclines. It is a prime trick-or-treating neighborhood, which means it is also a prime soliciting neighborhood. We get everyone: religious people (mostly Jevhovah’s Witnesses), carpet cleaners, magazine and peanut brittle peddling teenagers, vaguely Christian coloring books—you know, the usual. We...

It is difficult, leading the conventional life that I do, to find opportunities for drama and adventure. Not the terrible drama of political instability and violence that is actually around us but a happier, rakish style of adventure. Hints of danger, a little swagger, maybe even a tad louche, I take it where I find it. At the moment, these thrills are found mainly in my kitchen. While others...
No children. For now. Seriously. Stop asking.
The other day I ran into an acquaintance in the lobby of a building. She was talking to man I didn’t know. I smiled politely at him and told her hello. I didn’t want to interrupt and I headed on my way. Just before I walked out of the glass doors onto Ventura Boulevard, a good 25 feet away from my acquaintance, she yelled, “are you pregnant yet?”
I’m not. I make...

Macaroni Arts and Crafts
Honestly…WTF strikes again! I hope preschools everywhere are taking note. I think parents would prefer a D&G knockoff to the regular penne necklaces. I know they love whatever their children make them…but come on, taste level should come into play.

In honor of the general under-the-weatherness of everyone I know I am sharing Virus by Bjork off of Biophilia which, like the cold that came down on me like a hammer, dropped today.

I did some blogging over at BonAppetit.com. (Seems like old times, dinner dates and flowers.) I hope this inspires a little get together this weekend.

My Secret Agent Lover Man
Francesca Lia Block has a very special place in my heart. A sparkly, windy canyon, coyote crying, magical place in my heart. I read Weetzie Bat for the first of many times as a 12 year old and it made me love my hometown more. It made the idea of becoming a teenager, a woman, an adult, a parent, a person who lived in the world more exciting. I have a Kindle now so I rarely see book covers...

And the Mayo Clinic Cookbook
I have been making this quinoa risotto a lot. It delicious, it’s easy and it’s healthful. There are ethical issues surrounding the mother grain. The more I greedily buy it in bulk, fewer Bolivians can afford it. But that’s another post and I am choosing to gracefully cop out and address much less significant (in a geo-political sense) issues surrounding my dinner.

ReStore
Friends of the internet! Do you know about Habitat for Humanity’s retail stores? They sell surplus items as well as used and new furniture. I just learned about this tonight and felt the immediate need to share. I hear they are especially good if you are remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. Anybody need a sink? It’s for a good cause.

End of summer melancholy, corduroy lining.
The New York Times headline Last Call for Summer stabbed me in the heart with a barbeque fork. I am not ready for summer to be over. I don’t want it to get dark at 4:27PM. I don’t want nectarines to be out of season.
Here is the only thing that is making me feel like I can stand oranges instead of stone fruit, Uggs instead of ‘flops:
These pants. These pants will allow...

Emergency Prepardness
The evening we brought home Ruthie the dog I made my husband promise that no matter what happened we would never eat her. It didn’t matter if the zombie apocalypse hit, or we were housebound by a massive earthquake and all out of Trader Joe’s organic black beans, we would starve before we ate the dog. Catastrophic thinking is, according to Psychology Today, when one ruminates on...
Tyranny of the Bounty
We recently signed up for a farmer’s market produce delivery service. Every other Monday we receive a giant oil-cloth upholstered cooler (it’s really appealing) filled with organic finds from the previous day’s markets. It’s like secular, yipster Christmas! However, there is a dark side to this glorious convenience. There’s a lot of pressure to consume the...
I did it myself!
I found a gorgeous bracelet (tutorial) on Honestly…WTF via joeycake.
It turned out very well, if I may so say myself. Although there was a lot of trial and error. Really a lot. Embroidery floss was too thin, the string I dyed grey was too puffy, you can imagine the trials (and errors).
The hex nuts most agreed with plain old kitchen twine. It’s not just for trussing chickens...
